An extract from A Survey of Buddhism, Chapters 1,2 & 3

One would not feel so strongly about the matter, if scholars in Buddhism said that the Buddhist texts refer to, and Buddhists have always believed in, the existence of supernormal attainments and supernatural beings, but that they themselves were unable to accept such a belief. But instead of adopting this straightforward course, which would have the merit of at least not attempting to conceal the gulf between traditional beliefs and the modern scientific outlook, some scholars reason that since devas, for example, do not exist, and since the early Buddhist could not have believed in them, all references to them in the text must have been interpolated at a later date and should therefore be expunged. The scientific method thus becomes a veritable bed of Procrustes, in which Buddhism, the unfortunate victim, is either crushed or stretched, butin any case severely mutilated, in accordance with the whim of the investigator
