Advice from Nagarjuna’s Precious Garland By Sangharakshita ISBN 9781899579860 Read by Vajragupta
In a world of increasingly confused ethics, Living Ethically looks back over the centuries for guidance from Nagarjuna, one of the greatest teachers of the Mahayana tradition.
Drawing on the themes of Nargarjuna’s famous scripture, Precious Garland of Advice for a King, this book explores the relationship between an ethical lifestyle and the development of wisdom. Covering both personal and collective ethics, Sangharakshita considers such enduring themes as pride, power and business, as well as friendship, love and generosity.
An extract from Living Ethically
From Chapter 1: Friendship
So, if you are looking for a Buddhist teaching, follow the joy. A Buddhist centre or community should have a happy, friendly and peaceful atmosphere. The most important qualities for a Bodhisattva, and for anyone whose life involves teaching or leading fellow Buddhists, are inspiration and metta. If you cannot name the seven bodhyangas, for example, that does not matter so much. But you cannot do without inspiration and metta, and these need to be cultivated. Inspiration can be developed through the performance of puja (worship) and through the cultivation of spiritual friendship.
